Ladybug – April 14

Let me tell you about Bertha Louise.  Her character is rock-solid.  She is constant and unmoveable. She is always smiling. and I never hear her complain.  She gives joy to all who see her. Whenever people pass by, they point and smile.

I remember when she arrived at my house.  My neighbor, who was getting ready to move, rolled this big gray rock across the street from their yard to mine.  This rock was 18 inches long and about 14 inches wide and tall, and probably weighed between fifty to one hundred pounds or more.  Having never hefted it onto a scale, I can’t be more specific about its weight. I painted the rock red, added black spots and a smiling face. She has been smiling ever since that day.  I named her Bertha Louise and gave her a prominent place in my front flower bed.

When Covid-19 caused me to stay home and shelter in place, Bertha did the same.  I was making masks for family and friends. One day I used a paper towel and made a mask for Bertha Louise. The small lady bugs, Albert, Betty, Cindy, Darla, and Eugene didn’t want to be left out, so I made little masks for them too.  It didn’t take long for people to notice the masked ladybugs. Bertha Louise and her little friends were once more bringing joy to the masked individuals who walked past my home.

Maybe I should try to be more like Bertha Louise—always constant, always smiling, so I can give joy to others.
