A small brown bird sat on a post near my front yard. I listened to his cheerful little song. When he finished the last note, I spoke. “I like your little song.” He cocked his head and trilled a few more notes before stopping again. I spoke once more. He cocked his head, looked at me and chirped a few more tweets. As he finished his last song and flew away, my eyes caught sign of a small squirrel. He was motionless but his bright eyes stared at me. “Oh, so you were listening too.” The squirrel continued to stare at me. “You look really cute sitting there.” The squirrel remained motionless. I took one step forward and he raced for a tree. He circled around the trunk and paused to look at me before leaping to the fence and scurrying away.
I returned to my house, with a sense of gratitude that I exist in a world where I can not only enjoy nature, but–for a small moment–I could be part of it. There was a harmony and peace in that small exchange. I am blessed to live in this beautiful world.
